Design and Technology

The Design and Technology Curriculum at Abbotts Ann CE Primary School

Intent:

It is the intent of Abbotts Ann CofE Primary School for the Design and Technology curriculum to be taught in all year groups with learning directly linked to topics each term. Design and Technology projects are often made cross curricular and reflect our core Christian values of Compassion, Curiosity and Courage.

Key objectives of Intent within our Design Technology Curriculum are based on The National Curriculum. Pupils will:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

“It’s so interesting working out how different things are made and put together.” Hedgehogs

Implementation:

At Abbotts Ann CofE Primary School pupils are taught that products are to be made for a purpose and they are encouraged to use their creativity to ensure individuality in the design and construction of products. Pupils are provided with the opportunity to take part in projects which develop their global awareness of key issues and how they can make a difference through their design and technology contributions.

Delivery of the Design and Technology curriculum includes the two strands: Designing and Making and Cooking and Nutrition. Pupils are taught about the importance of product research to gain key insight into existing products and encouraged to explore and deconstruct examples and prototypes to better understand how they are made. Research into individual designers and the introduction of computing and coding of products is taught in KS2. All learning takes place in an inclusive, supportive and safe learning environment where pupils are taught the skills and knowledge needed to risk assess and take their conceptual ideas and make them reality. They learn about the importance of making on-going changes and improvements during making stages and to evaluate their own and others' work in a kind and compassionate way. Pupils are taught about the seasonality of ingredients and how they are grown, caught or reared.

“I like being able to decide the different ways to make my product the most useful and appealing that it can be, it feels good seeing my design come to life.” Owls

Impact:

Pupils at Abbotts CofE Primary School benefit from being taught an inclusive Design and Technology curriculum that harnesses creative expression in a useful and practical way. Our Christian values of Compassion, Courage and Curiosity are central to all teaching and learning and have created a school community where pupils feel safe, ready to learn and confident to challenge themselves and their design ideas. Pupils experience a sense of pride as their work is celebrated and exhibited throughout the school and this helps to develop feelings of self-esteem and self-belief amongst our learners.
