The Art Curriculum at Abbotts Ann CE Primary School

Intent:

It is the intent of Abbotts Ann CE Primary School for the Art and Design curriculum to be taught in all year groups with learning directly linked to topics for each term. Art and Design projects are often made cross curricular, linking to other subjects taught and reflecting our core values of curiosity, courage and compassion.

Key objectives of Intent within our Art and Design Curriculum are based on The National Curriculum. Pupils will:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

“Art and design helps to develop your creative side and it’s different to maths because you don’t have to get it exactly right.” Owls

Implementation:

At Abbotts Ann CofE Primary School pupils are taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. They learn about how to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Pupils learn about the key art and design vocabulary of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space and how these concepts are applied to a wide range of art and design techniques. They learn about different artists, craft makers, designers and architects. Pupils are taught within an inclusive learning environment and provided with the opportunities to take part in projects which develop global awareness and to visit different settings to expand cultural capital. Pupils are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they learn in art and design and express their opinions, seeking out similarities and differences to make links with their own work. Each pupil's experimentation and progression of skills and knowledge is captured in individual sketch books throughout Primary School. Pupils are taught to revisit, reflect and evaluate their own and others' artwork in a compassionate way which helps build resilience and artistic control.

Impact:

Pupils at Abbotts CofE Primary School benefit from being taught an inclusive Art and Design curriculum that cultivates their creative expression and personal development. Our Christian values of Compassion, Courage and Curiosity are central to all teaching and learning and have created a school community where pupils feel safe and supported to explore their artistic capabilities. Pupils are confident to work individually but also collaboratively for a shared purpose or art project. Working together has helped pupils develop communication skills and glean a firm understanding of Fundamental British Values, in particular Respect and Tolerance. Pupils experience a sense of pride as their artwork is celebrated and displayed throughout the school but also, when appropriate, within other settings across Hampshire and beyond. This sends a strong message to pupils that their artistic contribution has been communicated, is important and valued.
